Why Make This PB&J Smoothie Recipe?

As a kid I always opted for “cream cheese and jelly” instead of “peanut butter and jelly,” and if I’m honest I still think that peanut butter goes better with chocolate than it does with fruit.

Lately, though, I’ve surprised myself by embarking on something of a peanut butter and jelly streak. (See also: these peanut butter and jelly hand pies, or this PB&J parfait recipe…) I might be late to the party, but creamy peanut butter and sweet strawberry jelly really do make a surprisingly perfect pairing!

I developed this recipe with real strawberry jelly; otherwise, it’s just a peanut butter and strawberry smoothie, rather than peanut butter and jelly. Blended with oat milk, fresh fruit, and protein-rich Greek yogurt, this PB&J smoothie captures all of the flavors of the childhood lunchbox classic, in the form of a grown-up breakfast beverage.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Smoothie Ingredients

To make this PB&J smoothie, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Oat Milk – I made my smoothie with oat milk, but feel free to substitute another plant milk (soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk) or regular dairy milk.
  • Greek Yogurt – Greek yogurt (or strawberry Greek yogurt) adds protein and helps to thicken the smoothie. For a vegan version, use soy or coconut yogurt instead.
  • Fresh Strawberries – You’ll need 85 grams (about 1/2 cup) of hulled and diced berries. I prefer fresh strawberries, but frozen will work, too. And if you have some berries left over, you can save them to make strawberry compote, strawberry muffins, or strawberry overnight oats.

  • Peanut Butter – For the smoothest texture, opt for creamy peanut butter rather than chunky.
  • Banana – A frozen banana works best. I always keep a few peeled and diced bananas in the freezer so I’m ready to make smoothies on short notice.
  • Strawberry Jelly – I developed this recipe with real strawberry jelly. (Otherwise, it’s just a peanut butter and strawberry smoothie, rather than PB&J!) You can use strawberry jelly, jam, or compote, depending on your location and what you happen to have available.

How to Make a PB&J Smoothie

Recipe Tips and Tricks

You can make this smoothie using a high-speed blender, or a food processor.

Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions

Enjoy this PB&J smoothie immediately after blending.

Allow 2-4 hours for the banana to freeze before making your smoothie. I like to keep a few peeled bananas in the freezer at all times, so I’m ready to go whenever a smoothie craving strikes.

If making this recipe with homemade strawberry compote, you can prepare the compote a few days ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use. Homemade compotes also freeze nicely.
