Festive red, white, and blue 4th of July fruit skewers featuring fresh strawberries, blueberries, and watermelon, plus homemade star shaped marshmallows and plenty of edible glitter!

What Inspired These 4th of July Fruit Skewers?
Made with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and watermelon, plus homemade star-shaped marshmallows, these patriotic July 4th fruit skewers are a festive (and relatively healthy!) way to celebrate the 4th while using up all of those leftover berries at the back of your fridge.
Like my spun sugar sparklers and Creamsicle Rice Krispie treats, these fruit kebabs are easy to grab and enjoy without making a mess. (And while they’re most definitely kid-friendly, adults are sure to love them too!) Serve as a summertime snack or as a fun addition to a July 4th potluck, cookout, or pool party, either alone or accompanied by strawberry fruit dip or hot cocoa dip for dunking.

Fruit Skewer Ingredients
To make patriotic-themed fruit skewers, you’ll need:
- Watermelon – Start with fresh, ripe watermelon. Slice the melon into 1/2-inch thick slices then cut it into stars with a metal star cutter, or keep things simple and cut into 1-inch cubes instead.
- Berries – A mix of blueberries and strawberries create the patriotic color palette. Use fresh, not frozen berries.
- Marshmallows – I threaded my skewers with homemade star-shaped marshmallows; for a shortcut, substitute store-bought marshmallows instead.

- Skewers – You’ll need 10-inch or 12-inch wooden skewers, for assembly.
- Sparkles – I dusted my skewers with silver edible glitter for a sparkly finishing touch.
Additions and Substitutions
This recipe is highly versatile, and easily adjusted to suit your party theme or personal preferences; you can add or substitute ingredients depending on what you happen have on hand. Some of my suggestions include:
- Swap out the marshmallows. Replace the vanilla stars with homemade blueberry marshmallows or strawberry marshmallows, or use store-bought marshmallows instead.
- Change up the fruit. Use red raspberries instead of strawberries, or replace the blueberries with blackberries. If you’re not fussed about sticking with the patriotic color scheme, you can also mix in other fruits such as kiwi, bananas, mandarin oranges, grapes, mango cubes, pineapple slices, or other types of melon.
- Add a baked element. Alternate the fruit and marshmallows with donut holes, cubes of pound cake or angel food cake, or homemade brownies or Rice Krispie treats cut into 1 1/2-inch stars.
Making the Star-Shaped Marshmallows
Made with corn syrup, sugar, gelatin, and vanilla bean paste (no eggs!), poured into a pan, and cut with a metal star cutter, my homemade vanilla bean marshmallows are easy to prepare and make a fun addition to these fruit skewers.
See my marshmallow stars post for the full recipe and step-by-step instructions!

How to Make Fruit Skewers
To make these fruit skewers, start by washing, hulling, and halving the strawberries. Make and cut the star marshmallows. With a 1- or 1 1/2-inch star cutter, cut the watermelon into stars.

Next, thread the fruit, berries, and marshmallows onto 10-inch wooden skewers, allowing 1 1/2- to 2 inches at the bottom of each skewer as a “handle.” You can stick with the same pattern for all of the skewers, or vary it slightly. For variety, I chose to make each of my skewers slightly different:

Before serving, dust each skewer with edible glitter or edible foil stars for a sparkly finishing touch!
Recipe Notes and Tips
You can make as many skewers as you’d like. As shown here, I used 12 star marshmallows, 8 large strawberries, 3 5-inch watermelon slices, and about 50 blueberries to make a total of eight 10-inch skewers.
Feel free to add the fruit and marshmallows in any order you’d lke. I made each of my skewers in a different pattern.
Choose fruit that is ripe but not overripe. Do not use frozen fruit.

Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions
You can make the homemade marshmallows a week or more in advance, and store in an airtight container until ready to use.
Feel free to slice the strawberries and watermelon a few hours ahead of time, but don’t assemble the skewers until just prior to serving. (The fruit will stain the marshmallows and make them soggy.) If traveling to a picnic or potluck, I suggest preparing the fruit and portioning it into separate containers, then assembling the skewers when you reach your destination.
