Why Make This Peanut Butter Trail Mix?

Like puppy chow, this peanut butter-forward trail mix is one of my go-to recipes whenever I’m craving the classic “peanut butter and chocolate” combo.

This recipe began as a way to use up all of the various “odds and ends” left at the back of my kitchen cabinet, and quickly morphed into my go-to blend for long travel days and between-cues backstage snacking. (Outdoorsy types tell me it would make a good snack for camping or hiking, too…) Combine peanut-buttery Reese’s Pieces; chewy raisins; salty peanuts; chocolate-covered peanuts; and two kinds of chocolate, and voila! The perfect blend of salty and sweet.

Peanut Butter Trail Mix Recipe Ingredients

To make this peanut butter chocolate trail mix, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Reese’s Pieces – You’ll need 65 grams (about 1/3 cup) of Reese’s Pieces. If you have some left over, save the extra candies to make my bakery-style Reese’s cookie recipe.
  • Raisins – You can use black raisins, golden raisins, or a mix of both.
  • Peanuts – To create the classic salty-sweet taste, reach for  roasted and salted peanuts, rather than unsalted.

  • Chocolate Chips – I used a mix of semi sweet chocolate chips and white chocolate chips. For other chocolate suggestions, see my notes on “mix-ins,” below.
  • Chocolate Covered Peanuts – I tested this recipe with milk chocolate covered peanuts, but dark or white chocolate peanuts work, too. Look for chocolate covered peanuts in the candy/confectionery aisle, or packaged in plastic tubs with the nuts and dried fruit. They’re also available on Amazon.

Trail Mix Mix-ins

This trail mix recipe allows plenty of room for creativity. Stir in peanut butter chips; miniature Reese’s peanut butter cups; mini marshmallows or homemade marshmallows; chocolate covered espresso beans; sunflower seeds or chocolate covered sunflower seeds; chocolate covered pretzels; peanut butter pretzels; or your favorite dried fruit.
