Requiring just three ingredients (blackberries, sugar, and lime) this homemade blackberry compote recipe tastes better than anything store-bought, and allows you to adjust the flavor and consistency depending on your desired use. Swirl warm blackberry compote into oatmeal; layer it into a parfait; drizzle over slices of cheesecake or chocolate cake; or pair with a big scoop of vanilla bean ice cream for a fruit-forward summer dessert.

Key Compote Ingredients
- Blackberries – This recipe works with both fresh and frozen blackberries. If starting from frozen, don’t worry about about thawing them first. However, do keep in mind that frozen berries will take a few minutes longer to come to a boil, and will require a slightly longer cooking time due to the extra water content.

- Sugar – Granulated sugar (or caster sugar, measured by weight) sweetens and thickens the compote. Do not reduce the amount of sugar in this recipe, or the compote won’t thicken properly.
- Lime – Fresh lime juice and zest add a tart, citrus-y note that contrasts with the sweet blackberries. For the ideal consistency I recommend zesting the lime on a Microplane, rather than a box grater. The pieces produced by a box grater are too large and thick and will give the compote an unappealing texture.

A simple blackberry compote recipe made with fresh or frozen blackberries, granulated sugar, and lime.
Ingredients
250 grams fresh or frozen blackberries (9 ounces; about 2 cups)
38 grams granulated sugar (3 tablespoons)
15 milliliters water (1 tablespoon)
15 milliliters lime juice (1 tablespoon)
4 grams lime zest (2 teaspoons, packed)
Instructions
In a small saucepan, stir together blackberries, granulated sugar, and water.

Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until berries begin to break down and sauce thickens, about 15-20 minutes.

Remove from heat. Stir in the lime juice and lime zest.

Scoop into a bowl. Serve warm, or refrigerate until ready to serve. Compote will continue to thicken as it cools.

How to Use Blackberry Compote
You can use this blackberry compote for cheesecake, cake, or other baked goods, or drizzle it over vanilla ice cream, miniature pavlovas, or homemade vanilla pudding. For breakfast, use blackberry compote for pancakes, waffles, or French toast. Stir it into Greek yogurt, overnight oats (or hot oatmeal), or dishes of chia seed pudding, or spread the compote on scones, muffins, or slices of toast. I also like to layer my compotes into parfaits, or make a mixed berry Eton mess.
Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions
Refrigerate blackberry compote in an airtight container for up to five days. Serve cold, or rewarm in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the stovetop.
To freeze: Transfer to an airtight container and freeze for up to three months. Thaw in the refrigerator.
