Why Make This Blueberry Hot Chocolate?

I enjoy a mug of classic hot cocoa as much as the next person, but it’s also a beverage that lends itself to plenty of room for experimentation. Some of my favorite creations include gingerbread hot chocolate, raspberry and rose hot chocolate (made with a homemade rose simple syrup!) and a boozy hot chocolate with dark chocolate and red wine. I don’t think I’ll ever run out of ways to make a mug of hot chocolate my own.

The latest addition to my winter beverage collection? This blueberry hot chocolate recipe! Inspired by the Halloween-themed “boo berry” hot chocolate recipe I posted a few weeks back, this four-ingredient recipe balances fresh blueberries and sweet blueberry syrup with whole milk and good-quality dark chocolate. It’s perfect for a cozy night at home, but equally easy to double or triple to serve a crowd.

Blueberry Hot Chocolate Recipe Ingredients

To make this blueberry hot chocolate, you’ll need:

  • Fresh Blueberries – You’ll need 110 grams, or about 3/4 US cup, of fresh blueberries. (If you have extra berries, save them for a batch of blueberry muffins or a rustic blueberry galette.) Or, substitute a store-bought blueberry purée.
  • Whole Milk – Whole milk makes the creamiest hot chocolate, but feel free to substitute half-and-half, semi-skimmed milk, or your favorite plant milk.

  • Dark ChocolateOpt for a high-quality dark chocolate (Valrhona, Callebaut, Guittard) rather than grocery store chocolate chips. Chocolate chips contain stabilizers and are better for baking than melting into hot chocolate.
  • Blueberry Simple Syrup – I developed this recipe using my homemade blueberry simple syrup. It’s easy to make from scratch (and you’ll have plenty of leftovers to use for blueberry lemonade or blueberry iced tea!) but you can also substitute a store-bought blueberry cocktail syrup.

Preparing the Simple Syrup

To make the blueberry syrup, you’ll boil granulated sugar, fresh blueberries, and water in a saucepan until the berries break down. After allowing the mixture to cool, you’ll pass it through a fine mesh strainer to separate the berries from the syrup.

Garnishing and Serving Blueberry Hot Chocolate

Garnish each mug of blueberry hot chocolate with a dusting of unsweetened cocoa powder; a sprinkling of shaved dark chocolate; or a handful of crushed freeze-dried blueberries. You can also top your drink with homemade blueberry marshmallows (or store-bought mini marshmallows) or a dollop of freshly whipped cream.

Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions

You can prepare the blueberry simple syrup several weeks in advance. Refrigerate in an airtight container until ready to use.

Store leftover hot chocolate in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, transfer to a small saucepan and warm on the stovetop over low heat, stirring gently, until steaming. Or, pour into a microwave-safe mug and heat for 1-2 minutes or until warmed through.
