A whimsical “boo berry” Halloween hot chocolate recipe made with whole milk, white chocolate and fresh blueberries, garnished with homemade ghost marshmallows. One of the cutest Halloween drinks for children and adults alike!

Why Make This “Boo Berry” Halloween Hot Chocolate?
This “boo berry” hot chocolate is one of the cutest Halloween drinks for getting into the spirit of the spooky season.
To make it, purée macerated blueberries until smooth, then combine with good-quality chopped white chocolate and whole milk, along with a pinch of fine sea salt. (You can also add blueberry simple syrup if you love a super-sweet drink!) To finish, garnish each mug with one of my homemade ghost marshmallows.
The best thing about this recipe? It’s easily made ahead of time and refrigerated (and can be doubled or tripled to serve a crowd), so it’s great for a Halloween costume party. Served alongside a big bowl of fondant Halloween pretzels, of course!

“Boo Berry” Hot Chocolate Ingredients
To make this “boo berry” hot chocolate, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- Blueberries – Fresh blueberries work best, but you can substitute thawed, frozen berries if you don’t have fresh available.
- Granulated Sugar – For macerating the berries.
- Whole Milk – I prefer the creaminess of whole milk, but you can make this recipe with skimmed milk, or your favorite plant-based milk. Just remember that white chocolate contains dairy, so this hot chocolate is not suitable for vegans. (For a vegan beverage option, try my vegan hot chocolate recipe instead.)

- White Chocolate – Opt for good-quality chopped white chocolate or callets, rather than chocolate chips.
- Fine Sea Salt – A tiny pinch of fine sea salt cuts the sweetness of the white chocolate.
- Ghost Marshmallows – You can top your mug with homemade ghost marshmallows or store-bought ghost Peeps. For other garnish suggestions, see my notes below.
Notes on Sweetener
I find white chocolate plenty sweet on its own, but if you’re making this recipe for children or anyone who enjoys a super-sweet beverage, you may wish to add more sweetener to your drink. I recommend my blueberry simple syrup, which will add sweetness as well as an extra dose of blueberry flavor.
For a simpler option, you can sweeten your Halloween hot chocolate with honey, maple syrup, or plain simple syrup, to taste.

Preparing the Blueberry Purée
After macerating the berries in granulated sugar, simply add to the bowl of a blender or food processor and purée until smooth, then pass the purée through a fine mesh strainer to remove the seeds and bits of blueberry skin.

If you don’t want to make your own purée, you can purchase pre-made blueberry purée from a restaurant supplier or on Amazon. Portion the leftovers into an ice cube tray and freeze for future baking projects, or use to make blueberry sorbet.
Making the Ghost-Shaped Marshmallows
While you can serve this hot chocolate plain (or substitute store-bought ghost Peeps) my cute homemade ghost marshmallows really are the perfect finishing touch.
See my ghost marshmallows post for recipe and step-by-step instructions.

Garnishing Halloween Hot Chocolate
The best garnish? Ghost marshmallows, of course! If you don’t have time to make your own, you can substitute ghost Peeps, homemade vanilla bean marshmallows, or regular store-bought marshmallows.
Other garnish ideas include whipped cream (or coconut whipped cream); shaved white chocolate; freeze-dried blueberries; blueberry simple syrup; or an extra drizzle of blueberry purée.
Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions
For Halloween parties, prepare hot chocolate on the stovetop then pour it into a slow cooker. Place mugs and a ladle nearby, along with a big bowl of ghost marshmallows, homemade candy corn, or other Halloween treats.
This hot chocolate tastes best when freshly made, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, pour into in a small saucepan and warm on the stovetop over low heat until steaming, or microwave in a microwave-safe mug for 1-2 minutes or until warmed through.
