Why Make This Everything Bagel Seasoning Recipe?

As a New Yorker, I’ve long been a fan of the everything bagel. Salty, crunchy, garlicky, and coated in a flavorful blend of spices and seasonings, this New York City bagel shop staple tastes best when piled high with lox and cream cheese (and maybe some capers and red onions, too!)

Comprised of spice blend black and white sesame seeds, garlic granules, onion flakes, poppyseeds, and flaky sea salt,  everything bagel seasoning mimics the flavors of the NYC classic everything bagel. Stores like Trader Joe’s sell jars of their own everything bagel blend (you can also find it on Amazon) but it’s surprisingly simple to make your own at home.

Homemade everything bagel seasoning allows you to adjust the ingredients to suit your personal taste preferences. It’s also super easy to double or triple this recipe, so it’s great for gifting. I suggest packaging your everything bagel seasoning in pretty glass jars, with personalized labels or homemade stickers as a finishing touch.

Everything Bagel Seasoning Ingredients

To make homemade everything bagel seasoning, you’ll need white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, dried onion flakes, garlic granules (sometimes sold as granulated garlic), poppyseeds, and flaky sea salt.

If you enjoy a more pronounced garlic flavor, you can replace half of the dried onion flakes with dried minced garlic, or use a tablespoon of minced garlic in addition to the onion flakes.

Choosing the Best Ingredients

Choose fresh, good-quality seeds and spices for homemade everything bagel seasoning. Over time, seeds can turn rancid, and ground spices will lose their potency. If you’re planning to make a double or triple batch for gifting (you’ll also need a large quantity if you want to make everything bagel bread) I recommend purchasing bulk spices from Amazon or your favorite spice retailer, or in the international aisle at the supermarket.

How to Make Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning

It takes less than five minutes to make your own everything but the bagel seasoning, and it’s so, so easy.

To make homemade everything bagel seasoning, simply whisk all of the ingredients together in a small bowl. That’s it! Use the blend immediately (see my suggestions below), or store it in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

Ways to Use Everything Bagel Topping

Once you start mixing up big batches of everything bagel seasoning, you’ll start finding more and more ways to put it to good use. Some of my favorites include:

  • Breadmaking – Make bagels (duh!), dinner rolls, or a loaf of my everything bagel bread.
  • Snacking – Sprinkle everything bagel seasoning on popcorn or homemade crackers.
  • Appetizers – Instead of sesame seeds, I like to use everything bagel seasoning in puff pastry appetizer recipes like vegetarian sausage rolls and anchovy sticks.
  • Eggs – Everything bagel seasoning tastes great on just about any kind of eggs. Try it with scrambled eggs, fried eggs, hard boiled eggs, or even stirred into egg salad.
  • Vegetables – Garnish avocado toast, roasted vegetables or a plate of sliced raw veg for snacking. You can also make an everything bagel baked potato, or season potato wedges.
  • Rice – Everything bagel topping makes a great substitute for sesame seeds in rice balls, bowls, and sushi bakes. I’ll even sprinkle some on top of a bowl of plain white rice (with a little butter and soy sauce!) for a quick late-night dinner.

Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions

Store homemade everything bagel seasoning in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 6 months. The seeds and spices won’t spoil quickly, but they will decrease in flavor if stored for a long time.
