Made from fresh oranges and granulated sugar, this easy-to-make orange simple syrup recipe adds flavor to tea, coffee, and other beverages. It also moistens homemade cakes, and it works as an orange cocktail syrup, too!
Why Make This Orange Simple Syrup Recipe?
This easy-to-prepare orange syrup combines the vibrant flavor of fresh oranges with the sweetness of granulated sugar. It’s the perfect way to brighten up beverages and desserts.
This orange syrup recipe requires just three ingredients—sugar, water, and orange peels—and about 10 minutes of prep time, plus an hour to cool the syrup. (It’s also a great make-ahead recipe, since it lasts for several weeks in the fridge.) And because it comes in liquid form, this sugary syrup offers a distinct advantage over the granulated kind. No need to dissolve grains of sugar, so it won’t settle at the bottom of the glass when you stir it into iced coffee or tea.
How to Make Orange Syrup
To make orange simple syrup, simply (pun intended!) combine orange peels, sugar, and water in a small saucepan, simmer for a few minutes, then cover and set aside to cool. After steeping for an hour or so, just pass the orange-infused syrup through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the peels, and you’re good to go.
It’s super easy to make orange simple syrup, and so much cheaper than the store-bought version. Oh, and you won’t need the orange fruit for this recipe (just the peels), so save the sections for breakfast or lunch, or squeeze the juice and use it to whip up my orange almond cake recipe, or maybe make these chocolate orange shortbread cookies.
Ways to Use Orange Simple Syrup
- Cocktails: Use orange simple syrup to make fun cocktails and mixed drinks, like this orange sour.
- Non-Alcoholic Drinks: Stir homemade orange syrup into iced tea, iced coffee, or lemonade. It also works nicely in hot beverages like coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.
- Salad Dressing: Incorporate orange syrup into vinaigrettes for a zesty twist. (I think it would be nice in a salad with cranberries, pecans, and orange slices—ooh, and maybe some goat cheese, too!)
- Fruit Salad: Toss simple syrup with a fresh fruit salad (like my go-to citrus salad recipe) to enhance the natural sweetness, or add sweetness to fruit smoothies and homemade granitas.
- Breakfast: Stir the syrup into plain yogurt, cottage cheese, or porridge for a healthy, orange-infused breakfast, or drizzle it over a stack of pancakes, French toast, or waffles for a not-so-healthy treat!
- Baked Goods: Use it as a soaking syrup to add moisture and flavor to homemade cakes, muffins, and cupcakes.
Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions
Simple syrup can be stored in an airtight jar or container in the refrigerator for at least three weeks. After allowing the finished syrup to cool to room temperature, transfer it to a lidded container, refrigerate, and use as desired.
