Why Make This Valentine’s Day Gummy Candy Recipe?

Valentine’s Day has always been one of my favorite “candy” holidays. I love a good chocolate covered cherry (homemade chocolate covered cherries are especially nice, but I won’t say no to the boxed kind from the seasonal aisle at CVS, either…) and I adore a classic candy conversation heart. In Februaries past, I’ve developed recipes for rosewater truffles, heart-shaped sugar cookies, strawberry marshmallows, and even Valentine’s Day hot chocolate.

I’m also a big fan of a classic gummy candy. Last year I shared a recipe for a white chocolate bark with red gummy hearts. This year, I decided to adapt my rainbow gummy bear recipe to feature Valentine shapes, colors, and flavors instead.

This easy Valentine’s Day gummy candy recipe features unflavored gelatin and your favorite red or pink Jello flavor, plus cold water and a healthy dose of nonstick spray. Including chilling time, these heart-shaped gummies come together in about an hour, and will keep in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Ingredients for Making Valentine’s Day Gummy Hearts

To make Valentine’s Day gummy candy, you’ll need the following:

  • Nonstick Cooking Spray – For greasing the silicone heart mold.
  • Jello – You’ll need two 3-ounce (85-gram) packages. You can use pink or red Jello, such as raspberry, cherry, or strawberry, or make the gummy hearts in any color/flavor you’d like. The generic store brand equivalent is also fine, but make sure it contains sugar. I have not tested this recipe with sugar free Jello.
  • Unflavored Gelatin – You’ll need two .25-ounce packages of unflavored gelatin, or 14 grams of powdered gelatin. I prefer to purchase my gelatin in a big tub, because it’s great for making all kinds of recipes, like homemade cookies and cream marshmallows or a big batch of cranberry jelly candy for holiday gifting.

How to Make Heart Gummies

To make these heart-shaped Valentine gummies, start by whisking togerher red Jello, unflavored gelatin, and cold water, then microwave the mixture and carefully drop it into a silicone heart mold:

Refrigerate to set the gelatin, then pop the hearts from the mold:

Recipe Notes

I only made cherry hearts, but you can repeat this process with as many flavors and colors as you’d like. Cherry, raspberry, strawberry, black cherry, peach, cranberry, or watermelon would all be good, Valentine-colored choices.

Oh, and a quick tip! Don’t leave the eye dropper in the Jello mixture. As it cools, the gelatin will clog the eye dropper and, eventually, get stuck in the bowl of red Jello. (If the mixture does start to set in the bowl, rewarm it briefly in the microwave until it returns to liquid form.)

Recommended Tools and Equipment

You will need an eye dropper and a silicone heart mold for this recipe. I recommend using a plastic eye dropper rather than glass. (If the glass breaks, you’ll have to discard the entire batch!)

In addition, you’ll need a microwave to heat the gelatin mixture (and to rewarm the mixture as you work) as well as a silicone whisk, and a quarter sheet tray.

I have two silicone heart molds. If you want to make big batches of hearts, or hearts in multiple colors and flavors (raspberry, cherry, strawberry, etc.) you might want to invest in a second set of molds to help speed the process along.

Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions

Store gummy Valentine candy in a plastic food storage bag or an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
