An easy gummy bear recipe, inspired by Broadway Bares!
When I started this blog, I chose the name “Baste Cut Fold” because it reflects both of my worlds: costume design and cooking. Baste, cut, and fold are all frequently-used terms in the food industry, but they all mean things to costumers and seamstresses, too.
I’m starting to explore my food-related interests in a more serious way, with a goal of someday working in the industry at a professional level. However, to some degree I’ll probably also always have my hand in the world of costumes. There are many ups and downs to working in the entertainment industry. Rarely is it as glamorous as it looks from the outside. But I do truly enjoy the creative parts of my work, especially when I get to design with full creative freedom.
Gummy Bears and Broadway Bares
One of my favorite events to costume is Broadway Bares. Broadway Bares is a burlesque show produced annually by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. BC/EFA is a wonderful charity which supplies medications, health care, food, counseling, and emergency financial assistance all across the United States. Hundreds of designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, stage managers, technicians, dancers, choreographers, and other industry professionals volunteer their time to help create Broadway Bares each June. And, all proceeds go to BC/EFA. This year’s show, held on June 18th at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, raised a grand total of $1,568,114.
(Side note: If you didn’t get to attend the show but would like to make a contribution to a fantastic charity, you can donate to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS via this page.)
I’ve been designing for Broadway Bares for the past ten years. It is always a fun, crazy, glittery day, and I look forward to participating each year. My first Bares design was a set of Eat Me/Drink Me costumes for Broadway Bares: Wonderland, the Alice in Wonderland-themed show produced back in 2007.
Since then I’ve created costumes based on technology, works of art, fairy tales, and lots, lots more. (This year’s show was called “Strip U.” All designs were based around a school/university theme!) One of my favorites was the year that my passions came together. I got to design costumes for a diner waitress and a soda jerk, and made some pretty realistic fake ice cream props. (We needed something that would last all day, and not melt under hot stage lights!)
Bares is the Best!
A Gummy Bear Recipe for Bares
Broadway Bares is traditionally held during the month of June, the weekend before NYC Pride. (Over the years, I’ve had more than one dancer tell me that they planned to save their Bares costume and wear it to the parade!) So, in celebration of Broadway Bares, and the upcoming Pride festivities, I decided to create a recipe for rainbow gummy bears.
Easy Gummy Bear Recipe with Jello
These gummy bears are super easy to make. They require only a couple of ingredients: flavored Jello and and plain, unflavored gelatin, both of which are easily found at a neighborhood grocery store. Feel free to choose the Jello flavors you enjoy most. I used strawberry (red), peach (orange), pineapple (yellow), lime (green), berry blue (blue), and grape (purple).
You will need a clean eye dropper and a silicone gummy bear mold for this recipe. If you’re short on time, it will be helpful to have several sets of silicone gummy bear molds. I only had two molds. So, making six colors took a lot longer than I wanted it to. If I make this recipe again, I’ll definitely purchase another set of molds to speed things along.
One thing to note: If you use a full package of Jello (and make all six colors of the rainbow) you will end up with a lot of bears. You could choose to use half packets of Jello (save the rest for later), or only make 2-3 colors. However, these will last for a few weeks in an airtight container, either in a cool pantry or in the fridge.

PrintEasy Gummy Bear Recipe with Jello
- Total Time: 11 minutes
- Yield: 2 quart-size Ziploc bags 1x
Description
An easy gummy recipe bear for rainbow gummy candies. These DIY gummy bears with Jello are perfect for celebrating Pride month.
Ingredients
6 3-oz packages Jello (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, in flavors of your choice)
6 .25-oz packages unflavored gelatin
2 cups cold water
Nonstick cooking spray (or olive oil)
Instructions
Prepare gummy bear mold by spraying with a thin layer of nonstick cooking spray or olive oil. Set aside.
Open your package of red Jello. In a small microwave-safe mixing bowl, combine red Jello powder with one .25-oz package of unflavored gelatin. Stir in 1/3 cup cold water. Allow mixture to sit at room temperature for 8-10 minutes before proceeding to the next step.
Microwave Jello mixture on high for 30 seconds. Stir, then microwave for 15 seconds more.
Use an eye dropper to drop Jello mixture into gummy bear molds. Transfer molds to refrigerator and allow bears to chill for 15-20 minutes.
Once bears have chilled, remove molds from fridge. Gently pop bears from silicone mold onto a sheet of wax paper.
Repeat the steps above with your orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple flavors. Once I got a system going, I realized that I could chill one tray of bears while preparing the next.
Store gummy bears in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
Notes
Feel free to choose the Jello flavors you enjoy most. I used strawberry (red), peach (orange), pineapple (yellow), lime (green), berry blue (blue), and grape (purple).
If you’re short on time, it will be helpful to have lots of silicone gummy bear molds. I only had two molds, so making six colors took a long time. If I make this recipe again, and want to do a wide variety of colors, I’ll definitely purchase another set of molds to speed things along.
