Why Make These Nutella Rice Krispie Treats?

If you’re a Nutella aficionado like me, you’ll love these Nutella Rice Krispie treats.

Made with just five ingredients—puffed rice cereal, dark chocolate, Nutella, marshmallows, and unsalted butter—this easy no-bake recipe comes together in 25 minutes of active prep time, plus some additional cooling time to allow the cereal mixture and topping to set.

My recipe features a chocolate-hazelnut cereal base (think classic Rice Krispie treats, with a Nutella twist!) plus a ganache layer on top.  Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself, this recipe is sure to become a staple in your kitchen repertoire. It’s certainly one of my favorites!

It’s World Nutella Day!

Celebrated annually on February 5th, World Nutella Day is a global event dedicated to the iconic chocolate-hazelnut spread.

World Nutella Day began in 2007 when Sara Rosso, an Italy-based American blogger and Nutella enthusiast, decided to inspire fans to share their passion for the creamy treat. Over the years, the day has grown into an international phenomenon, with people showcasing Nutella-inspired recipes, sharing creative artwork, and posting photos and stories of their Nutella moments on social media.

Ferrero, the parent company of Nutella, officially adopted the celebration in 2015. Today, there are giveaways, contests, and even Nutella ambassadors. In 2025, fans can mark the day by whipping up Nutella-based treats, participating in online challenges, and joining virtual or local events honoring this beloved nut-and-chocolate spread.

Nutella is absolutely one of my guilty pleasures, so of course I observe this “holiday.” (See also: Last year’s World Nutella Day recipe: Nutella Brownies!) If you’re in the mood to celebrate, these Nutella Rice Krispie treats will definitely fit the bill.

Nutella Rice Krispie Treat Ingredients

To make Nutella Rice Krispie treats, begin by gathering the following ingredients:

  • Unsalted Butter – You’ll need 75 grams, or about 5 tablespoons. No need to soften, since you’ll melt it anyway.
  • Nutella – Both the cereal treats and the ganache topping contain Nutella, so you might as well go ahead and buy a big jar! If you have some left over (not exactly a bad problem to have…) I’ve included a few suggestions below.
  • Marshmallows – You’ll need 300 grams, or 10 1/2 ounces, of marshmallows. Because it’s difficult to accurately measure marshmallows by volume (sizes vary between countries and even brands, and a cup of jumbo marshmallows does not equal a cup of large marshmallows, or a cup of minis) I highly recommend using a kitchen scale to weigh the marshmallows, rather than measuring by volume.

  • Puffed Rice Cereal – You can use name brand Rice Krispies, or any generic puffed rice cereal. Keep in mind that Nutella itself is gluten free, so if you opt for a gluten free rice cereal, the treats will also be gluten free. Just be sure to double-check the ingredient lists on your chocolate and marshmallows, too.
  • Dark Chocolate – To make the ganache. I recommend using a good-quality dark chocolate, rather than chocolate chips.
  • Hazelnuts – If desired, you can finish your treats with crushed or chopped hazelnuts (sprinkle before the ganache sets!) I haven’t included nuts in the recipe below, but feel free to scatter a handful on top for a bit of crunch.

Uses for Leftover Nutella

If you have some Nutella left in the jar after making these Rice Krispie treats, I suggest giving my Nutella brownies, Nutella hand pies, or Nutella ice cream a try! You can also spread it on toast, pancakes, or waffles; swirl it into yogurt or oatmeal; use it as a dip for fresh fruit; or drizzle it over ice cream. However, I personally think that the best way to use up leftover Nutella is to eat it by the spoonful, straight out of the jar!

Tips and Tricks

When pressing the cereal into the tin, be gentle. Do not pack the mixture too firmly, or the treats will be hard and difficult to bite.

This recipe includes two cooling steps. First, you’ll cool the marshmallow-cereal mixture after pressing it into the tin. Then, after adding the ganache, allow the tin to sit at room temperature until the topping sets. (If you’re impatient like me, feel free to slice right away, but be prepared for a chocolate-y mess!) You can pop the tin in the refrigerator to speed the process along, but I do not recommend keeping the treats in the fridge long-term, or they will be very difficult to bite.

Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions

These Rice Krispie treats definitely taste best on the day they are made. However, you can store leftovers in an airtight container (layer the treats between parchment to prevent them from sticking together) at room temperature for 2-3 days. I do not recommend storing these in the refrigerator.
