Made with zesty lemons and homemade blueberry simple syrup, this blueberry lemonade recipe offers a refreshing (and colorful!) beverage option during the long, lazy days of summer.
What’s Great About This Blueberry Lemonade Recipe?
There’s something undeniably satisfying about making your own lemonade. While it’s easy enough to buy the store-bought stuff, nothing says “summer” quite like squeezing fresh lemons to make a big, icy pitcher of homemade lemonade. And what makes homemade lemonade even better? Blueberries!
Sweet and refreshing, with just the right hint of tartness from the berries, this blueberry lemonade recipe is one of my favorite ways to cool off on a hot summer afternoon. This recipe is worth making for the flavor alone, but the best part is the color—a vibrant reddish-purple, with no food coloring or artificial ingredients required. Plus you can adjust the sweetness as desired, or even add a splash of vodka for a grown-up, spiked blueberry lemonade drink.
Blueberry Lemonade Ingredients
It only takes three ingredients to make this lemonade recipe, and one of them is water! You’ll need:
- Lemon Juice – You’ll need 115 milliliters, which is about 1/2 cup, or the juice of four large lemons. Be sure to use freshly squeezed lemon juice, not bottled or reconstituted.
- Blueberry Syrup – I developed this recipe using my homemade blueberry simple syrup. It’s quite easy to make your own syrup from scratch (and you can save the leftovers for fun things like pancakes, coffee, or cocktails!) but if you don’t have time for the DIY version, you can also substitute a store-bought cocktail syrup.
How to Make Blueberry Lemonade
It’s really, really easy to make a pitcher of blueberry lemonade. First, whisk together water and freshly-squeezed lemon juice. Stir in the blueberry simple syrup (see my notes above, and make-ahead suggestions below). Chill the pitcher for an hour or two, then pour over ice, garnish, and serve.
Garnish Ideas for Lemonade with Blueberry
You can have a lot of fun garnishing your homemade blueberry lemonade. My suggestions include:
- Fresh Blueberries: Float a few on top of each glass for a burst of color.
- Lemon Slices or Wedges: For visual appeal and an extra hit of lemon.
- Mint Leaves: For a refreshing, minty touch and a pop of bright green.
- Lavender Sprigs: For a subtle floral note. (You could even stir in some lavender simple syrup for a blueberry lavender lemonade twist!)
- Edible Flowers: Such as pansies or nasturtiums, for a beautiful and decorative touch.
- Candied Citrus Peel: Add homemade candied peels for sweet and decorative finish.
Make-Ahead and Storage Suggestions
This blueberry lemonade recipe is easy to double or triple, making it ideal for large summer gatherings like picnics, cookouts, birthday celebrations, or outdoor events. And when it comes to summer beverages, you really can’t go wrong with lemonade.
I suggest making the blueberry syrup ahead of time. It will keep for several weeks when stored in the refrigerator, so you can prepare it a week or more in advance, if desired.
